Training A Dog To Stay- Step by Step Technique

Training your dog to stay at a place without moving or running around is a very important stage towards training your dog to listen to your commands. By teaching your dog how to stay calmly at one place, you can keep him out of unwanted and dangerous places and also teach him to behave when there are people visiting your place and also when you are cleaning or mopping your house and do not want him to follow you everywhere. Here is a step by step method by which you can teach your dog to stay:
  • Make sure that the training is carried out in a familiar surrounding and that you are stocked with the small treats for your dog. These treats and a lot of praise are the two prerequisites of the training program! Also make sure that the dog knows the “sit” and “down” commands well before you train him to stay.

  • The first command that you are to give your dog is the “sit” command. After the dog is sited, you are to take the name of the dog and ask him to “stay”. The tone to be used should be an authorative one and this means that you are to look straight into the eye of your dog and command it to stay.
  • Hold your hand out and make your dog stay in the position for a few seconds and then release him by saying “okay”. Rewarding him and praising him for his effort after this is a good idea.
  • This process should be carried out again after sometime but only this instead of being in front of him, ask him to “stay” and then move away and see if your dog stays in his place. Let him sit for some time longer this time and if he succeeds, you can release him and praise him and also reward him at the same time. If however he moves away the second you do, you will have to repeat the third step over and over again till he learns.
  • Train him everyday and increase the duration of the stay.
