American Staffordshire terrier is a large “breed of dog”.

Appearance

The average weight of an American Staffordshire terrier is about sixty two to eighty eight pounds whereas its height is about nineteen to twenty one inches. It has a short, shiny and thick coat. It is of square build and its chest is broad and deep. The American Staffordshire terrier’s neck is well arched and strong.

Temperament

These dogs are quite tenacious, courageous, friendly, attentive, devoted and courageous. They are quite friendly with human beings and have a protective attitude towards them. These dogs are also quite friendly with owners and children. What is more interesting is that they even get along well with other animals including dogs. If you don’t socialize them properly, then they may develop an aggressive attitude.

Health

The average life span of an American Staffordshire terrier is about nine to seventeen years. Cardiac disease is one of the prime diseases that leads to their death.

History

In 1830s animal fights, particularly bearbaiting and bull-baiting was banned in Ireland and Old Britain. From then onwards, people started to organize dogfights and rat fights. It is at this point of time that the little strains were introduced in dog-fights!

Miscellaneous

The American Pit Bull Terrier as well as the American Staffordshire terrier are some-what similar! The only difference between them is their “builds”. The bone structure of the American Staffordshire terrier is different from the bone structure of the American Pit Bull Terrier.
